The crown of Iran’s natural beauty

Mount Damavand rises to about 5,610 metres. It is the highest peak in Iran and the highest volcano in Asia, and its grandeur has captured the hearts of adventurers, nature lovers and photographers alike. It stands in the Alborz mountain range, north-east of Tehran, but it is more than a mountain: in Persian culture and literature it is a symbol of perseverance and majesty. This dormant, snow-capped volcano has inspired countless tales, poems and dreams, and its place in Iranian mythology, where it is tied to legends of courage and freedom, adds to its mystique.

Seeing the mountain in person is an awe-inspiring experience. The rest of us rely on the artistry of photographers to bring its beauty to life. One of them is my dear friend Amirali Afsharjam (opens in a new tab), a professional photographer whose work captures the essence of Damavand with breathtaking clarity.

When I first built this website, I chose one of Amirali’s images of Damavand for its homepage, and the same photograph now opens this article. Taken at sunset, it shows the peak bathed in a golden glow as the last rays of the day touch its snow-tipped summit. The sky shifts from warm orange and yellow to the deep blue of dusk, which gives the scene a serene yet powerful atmosphere. The image means a great deal to me, not only for its beauty but because it was taken by one of my closest and oldest friends.

A photographer’s eye for nature

Damavand is a highlight, but Amirali’s photography goes well beyond one landscape. His portfolio is full of wildlife and natural scenes that evoke a sense of wonder. Two more of his photographs show his deep connection with nature.

The first shows a majestic stag standing tall in a vibrant autumn forest. The earthy greens, yellows and oranges frame the animal perfectly and balance the subject with its setting. You can almost feel the stillness of the moment, as if you were standing there, watching nature in its purest form.

In the second, a delicate bird perches on the branch of a tree. The fine detail of its feathers, the play of light and shadow, and the contrast between the bird’s soft tones and the bare winter branches show Amirali’s skill in capturing the subtle beauty of the natural world. With the calm of a winter morning, the image is a perfect example of his ability to find artistry in simplicity.

A tribute to friendship

Amirali’s photography has enriched this website. These images reflect his talent, and also the kindness and generosity he has always shown me as my best friend. Through our many adventures and the memories we share, he has been a constant source of inspiration and support.

This article is a tribute to the beauty of Mount Damavand and the natural world, and a heartfelt thank-you to Amirali for sharing these moments with me and for capturing them so beautifully through his lens. His kindness, creativity and unwavering friendship mean the world to me, and I am grateful for the memories we have made and for those still to come.
